This Morning

Today i have sorted out meeting the level 2 student who wants to be in my video.
here is an image of him in his storm-trooper costume.

I will talk to him about a date to film.

Friday 11 February 2011

Possible Ideas

In todays lesson i was talking to steve about a student in his class who is getting a storm trooper outfit, This got me thinking about possibly using him in my video as a mutually beneficial task, to use in both out portfolios.
Im now having an idea of a modern day Jedi Battling a Storm Trooper Commando. The video will be about a one min long.

Kelly Jones: Lead singer of the Stereophonics

Personal Background:

Kelly Jones was born in the small Welsh ex-mining village of Cwmaman, spending his childhood with his two older brothers, Kevin and Lee. Both of his parents worked in factories, however his father also found time to coach youth football and pursue his own singing career. He went on to secure a record deal with Polydor, who renamed him 'Arwyn Davidson' due to the sheer number of Joneses in the music business at the time.
During his youth his uncle, a boxing referee, got him interested in the sport, and he later competed at a high level in South Wales. Following this he moved onto football, where he played for his county. He has been a life-long fan of Leeds United football club, aided by his two brothers' dedication to the team. He often says AC/DC is his favorite band.
Kelly Jones is known for wearing vintage clothing, and owns countless leather jackets. He is frequently seen wearing sunglasses even at night time concerts and indoors

Attitudes and Beliefs:

Career Path and Success:

Kelly Jones is the lead singer of Stereophonics, They were the first band to sign to the record label V2 (Virgin Records) Their debut EP Looks Like Chaplin did not have enough copies made to enter the charts and their next single Local Boy in the Photograph was one place shy of making the UK Top 50. However, their debut LP Word Gets Around did however make it to #6 in the UK Album chart.
In February 1998, they received a Brit Award for Best New Group, the same week as a re-issue of Local Boy in the Photograph made number 14 in the charts and their first album went gold in the UK, selling over 100,000 copies. During that year Stereophonics had tours in Europe, Australia and the USA.

Instaltion

Here are some images of my finished piece in the space, as you can see it is much larger than i first planed. I think the image works well in the space, with all the dirt and grubbiness of the bottom platform and the wall.

Thursday 20 January 2011

evaluation

1. This is the final design of my piece, though it is bigger then i designed first. The first idea for my final piece was to have one image with a dark filter over the top, i then spoke to my mentor, who suggested having three different images as one piece, so that is what i did. I the decided i would have my images as a kind of glitch art and printed them all as A4 and mounted them in a windowed mount board.

After looking at the space i realised that my piece was far too small for the space, so i had my images printed at A1 and mounted them on an 8ft white backing board.

2. I believe my skills have developed over this project, for example use of photoshop, i was experimenting with filters all the way though the project and feel i have become a better photo editor.

3. So far i have had good feedback for my piece, from my mentor and from the changing spaces lady, i took my friend brad to see it the other day and he was impressed with what i had done. I also spoke to some people who stopped and they said that the could imagine such a piece in a gallery, but they may have just said that because they knew it was mine.

4. Im very proud of my final piece, Im glad i got it blown up because it looks far better at the size it is now. If i had more time to complete the project i think i would have made more images so i could of had a bigger installation.

Final installation piece

The Piece i put up in the shop window ended up being very different to the piece i had posted earlier. The piece i originally made was too small for the space and ended up being overwhelmed by it, So i had each image printed size A1 and mounted them on a 8ft board that fills the space.

Monday 17 January 2011

Health, Safety and Copyright

Considering the issue of health and safety when cutting out the windows in the mount board, i had a photography teacher show me how to use the tools properly so i would not cut myself wile using it.
Also i took regular screen brakes wile editing my images as not to damage my eyes.

To adress the issue of Copyright i made sure the images i used were under the creative commons license to be Reused and Modified.

final piece

Statement of intent

  1. Title: I am currently waiting till my piece is finished before i name it.
  1. Medium: I decided to use Digital Media because i am used to working with photoshop and i feel i have more control over what I’m doing as a pose to conventional art Mediums.
  1. Format: I am using Adobe Photoshop to create the Images for my Piece, i am planning to have 3 images all around A5 Size.
  1. subject matter: My subject Matter is the personal issue of Host Migration, My final piece will be a twist on Host Migration.
  1. What Processes + Techniques will you employ: In Photoshop i am taking my images and applying filters to darken and make them hard to make out properly then applying the text host migration across all three. to darken the image i have been creating a layer over the top of the image and filling it in black, then changing the opacity of that layer, i prefer this method because you can get a far darker filter than any of the presets.

This is a reminder of my Statement, overall all everything has gone to plan with my project and i have only made a few cosmetic changes to the original design, for example having it as three different images rather than one and making the images look like there was some kind of computer malfunction wile they were being made.

If i had more time i would have looked online for a tutorial to make the image fade into pixels and some other cool effects.

    Feed Back

Today a representative of Changing Spaces came to see my work and give me some feed back,
She seemed to like the idea behind my work and suggested that i try to disrupt my image even more so i am going to print out my images in reverse and stick them face down in a glue that dries clear the scrape off the paper when it has dried so some of the images will fall out and make it look like a found artefact.

    Mentor Feedback

Today i spoke to Nick about my project, Nick said i should be looking for examples of out of copyright art. He also had an idea about my final piece to split it into 3 different images with host migration written once across all three. i like the idea and plan now to explore other ways to present my piece that i haven't thought of yet.

    Mentor

I am going to appoint Nick Potamitis as my Mentor. I chose nick because he has a PHD in Greek Cinema and is media teacher, so he is someone i can ask for a creative and objective opinion.

    Breakdown

I am planning for my piece to be about A3, printed out from digital media, photoshop after i have edited the image. I will be using Adobe Photoshop to edit and manipulate the image that i have taken myself or found on creative commons. I would imagine my piece to be mounted on something and hung in the window. I think it will work in the space because the image will be very dark and hard to see properly so i would expect people to look hard at it to try to see that it is.

    Synopsis

The main idea is most migration. it is something that happens on pear to pear hosted severs on video games. The idea i have it to find a pice of creative commons fine art or take an artistic photo my self and apply a filter to darken the image so it is hard to see what it is, so the meaning of the image is objective.

    TweetPitch

My basic Idea is to have a pice of fine art with a dark filter over the top making it hard to see, with host migration over the top.

    Host Migration definition

    Host migration;

If a match host leaves the game, or if the host struggles to support the game, a 'host migration delay' allows a new host to be selected and the game to continue.

    (if it works)

    Project Proposals

    Thursday 6 January 2011

    Issue

The Issue i have chosen to work on is the personal Issue of, Host Migration.
I chose this as my Issue because i encounter 'Host Migration' a lot playing peer to peer hosted server video games.
What sparked my interest in this Issue, Is the feeling of rage when the host drops out of the game and you all have to wait wile the game picks a new one, And the annoyingly inconvenient time it happens.

    video feed back

This is the feedback from my client

This is quite intriguing and gave me vertigo as i was in the position of the builders up high! I didn't realise it was going to say coca cola till the end, so that was clever. I think the thing that is lacking from the video as it stands is the sense that you might be critiquing globalisation. Is there something you can add for the exhibition that will give us this perspective, for as it stands, I'd read it as coca cola is great- almost like a clever ad for it. Is there something which could counter this that could go alongside?

I'm glad the Coca Cola sign wasn't obvious till the end. If i did this again, i would try to get on a multiplayer server and have one view of it being built at a distance with two people building the logo. As for the exhibition add on, I could write a piece to go along side explaining the concept.

    final video

This is the final video i have made.

I am now awaiting feed back from the client.

    Wednesday 1 December 2010

    Today

Today i have been watching time-lapse videos on YouTube, to give me an idea of what i need to do for my video.
    For Example:

I would not be able to do a Time-lapse like this one because i don't have a modded server, so i will have to Record myself making it in first person.

Today i had a go at building 8bit characters in minecraft.

I made a Avatar of Mr. T and Megaman.

I Also measured the amount of blocks you can stack in Minecraft, (32) so i can make sure i can fit everything in when i come to do the final Video.

    Image progression

This post is to show some things that can be done in Minecraft,
I Started with this photo and put it into Illustrator and added a grid to draw in lines that look 8Bit.
Here is the image with the 8Bit mask over the top, i then took this image and coped it into Minecraft by building it from blocks.
Here is the image in Minecraft 8Bit.

    24 hours check point

At the 24 hour mark of our project, i have so far been exploring both my ideas using Mincraft to create figures and building and i have also been drawing some 2d animation.

For far it has been going well. i have converted full quality pictures into 8 bit the created it in Minecraft.

next i plan to do an in-depth look at other people who have responded to Globalization though media, hopefully as related to what i am doing as i can.

    Video Stats

This is the viewing statistics of SDC.

The chart shows that sins the video has been online its had 52 plays so far, only 16 of those plays have been watched all the way though, wether this means people are stopping the video before the credits finnish, or people don't like it and give up half way is unknown.

The comments posted generally leads me to believe people like the show, people saying things like,

"I really enjoyed watching this webisode because I find it very funny to watch. I like all of the special effects which have been used and I would definitely watch the next episode if there was to be one."

    And

"I like the use of different shots, especially when one of dancer's falls backwards into the other dancer's arms, and you see it from their point of view. Also, quite funny in places. Good use of special effects for the superpowers."

    +Funny
    +Montage looks good
    +good use of casting
    +reverse shot
    +music

    -dose not make sense
    -Sound/dubbing

    Teacher (Steve) feedback:

I have to say I know it’s a roughcut but I found myself following quite intently right to the end. Probably maybe because I was in it! There is a good flow with the action, classroom setups at the beginning, dance routines being practiced and then the corridor scene all build up the characters and general story. I’m looking forward to seeing how the special effects add to it all. This will obviously tighten up the editing of the parts that have the added effects.

    Market Research

Today we made a poll, Asking which webisode to produce... Sci-fi Dance comedy, Horror/Thriller, Modern day cowboys
here is an image of the results:

This table shows that people we asked in the age group 16-19 are not as interested in cowboys films as horror or Sci-fi-hybrids.

    Book Research

George Lucas - by Jim Smith
    under Copyright act of 2003
First published by Virgin books Ltd in Grate Britain
    Thames Wharf studios
    Rainville Road
    London
I chose this book because one of my ideas it to make a light-saber fight video. I picked this up because i thought it may contain information about George Lucas' creation of the star wars films.

Film directing Shot by Shot - by Steven d. Katz
    Under Copyright act of 1991
published by Michael Wiese Productions, 3960 Laurel Canyon Blvd
Film Directing Shot by Shot: Visualizing from Concept to Screen (Michael Wiese Productions)
I picked up this book because for both my ideas i will need a variety of different shot types.
I think this book is about different camera angles and shot.
I think this book will help because it contains different shot types and ways of story-boarding.

    My Saatchi review

The Saatchi Gallery is the first place to go for new and innovative modern art, with a range of very different art styles.

This modern art invokes many different opinions for example, "The work in this show feels lighter in spirit than British art has for a generation."

    (Richard Dorment - Daily Telegraph)

I felt a little underwhelmed when in the Gallery, with only two rooms really doing anything for me, The oil room and the room full of speakers.

I think i preferred them because of the scale of the piece.

A quote from Charlotte Sinclair of vogue, "if the exhibition had happened at the Tate Gallery it might have been less amazing in a way, but because it was at the old, fuddy-duddy

Royal Academy it, suddenly took off."

I found much of the art in the show to be strange or slightly confusing, not to my taste. But a few select pieces were utterly amazing, For example 'Untitled' a room full of 300

speakers all connected to a self playing piano playing an erie sound track.

I enjoyed the Gallery and show as a hole but disliked allot of the work in it.

"The art is less attention-seeking than anything seen in the headline-grabing YBA era"

    (Andy Warhol - Artist)

    Film remake assessment

What people in my group did!

Emma: Worked hard making play doe plus delivering a killer line!
    "where's your locker?"

Tina: Also made all the play doe food with emma and gave most of the direction for the camera during the shoot.

Alex: was the camera man for the shoot, and edited half the video.

Charna: played pedro in the video and also secured a locker for us to use. i don't think she wanted to be in the video, but stepped up when Alex wouldn't. Plus edited the second half of the video.

    Constructive feed back!

Emma: Nick said emma was in the background laughing. but delivered her line well.

Tina: i find Tina could of been more open about participating in the video, but gave good direction on angles for Alex

Alex: I found Alex not willing to participate in the Video and gave no reason why, but his camera work came out well.

    Charna:

    Todays Task

Today we were given a task to recreate a scene from a film.
we were given a scene from Napoleon Dynamite.
The sequence included three characters, some dialogue and some challenges in terms of camerawork and editing.

we were told to replicate the sequence

    EX PRO

    1st idea!
A music video, with a song written by me and a few friends, then recorded so we have a clean soundtrack to lip-sync and play-sync too, this will give us a better quality edit and a cleaner sound to lip-sync to. then record and edit the music video.

    2nd idea!
A short film, based on star wars including a light saber battle with intercut narrative.
(depending on the outcome of the after effects lesson. that will be this week NICK!)
    Here is an Example!
